Novant Health, NeuroFlow partner to support mental health in patients, employees

Novant Health, a health system serving North and South Carolina, has partnered with NeuroFlow, maker of behavioral health integration software, to support mental health and prevent burnout for patients and employees.

Using NeuroFlow’s mobile technology, Novant patients 13 and older diagnosed with depression will have around-the-clock access to evidence-based digital mental health resources and support. These features include well-being screenings, mood and sleep logs, educational content and journaling. The benefit will also be offered to Novant Health’s more than 36,000 team members.

The company argues these resources engage patients between visits with their providers and provide real-time alerts to clinicians when a patient needs additional support or is at risk for self-harm. The partnership is made possible by grant funding through the Duke Endowment. The program launched at several clinics in North Carolina, with plans to expand it to more mental health conditions, patients and team members in the coming year.

“Our partnership with NeuroFlow gives patients grappling with mental and behavioral health needs continuous access to a digital toolbox, and—most importantly—they can be monitored by a Novant Health physician who can provide additional support and intervention,” Ashley Perrott, M.D., senior physician executive for Novant Health’s Community Health & Wellness Institute, said in a press release.

"Now more than ever organizations are using technology to enhance that relationship in-between visits to ensure patients are not left alone to manage their complex conditions,” NeuroFlow Chief Medical Officer Tom Zaubler, M.D., said in the announcement. “These capabilities are critical in scaling proven collaborative care models to better identify and efficiently serve patients with behavioral health needs."

Novant team members will have access to NeuroFlow’s self-care management tool. “Burnout in the healthcare industry is at an all-time high and it’s been a concentrated area of focus for Novant Health for some time now,” Thomas Jenike, M.D., SVP and chief well-being officer for Novant Health, said in the press release. “NeuroFlow is a promising, confidential self-care option that complements the in-person and peer support services we offer.”

NeuroFlow has raised $57 million to date. In the past, the company has partnered with Magellan Healthcare to bring various support to Magellan’s clinical team, including communication channels, medical records, reports on at-risk patients and personalized clinical content. It has also worked with Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic to support frontline clinical staff. Most recently, NeuroFlow partnered with Emory Healthcare and Emory University’s brain health center to scale Emory’s collaborative care model and pilot a primary care suicide prevention program.
