Humana partners with 2 durable medical equipment companies for home care

Humana has tapped two durable medical equipment providers to provide additional services to its members in the home.

The Medicare Advantage insurer reached agreements with AdaptHealth Corp. and Rotech Healthcare to provide value-based DME services to members in its HMO plans starting July 1. Each company will service a different region of the country, Humana said in the announcement.

The partnerships are part of Humana's broader push to expand value-based care into the home. The insurer said that it is prioritizing the development of a value-base home care model that it is aiming to provide to 40% of its Medicare Advantage members by 2025.

The new agreements will also enable Humana to unify its sourcing for DME, making the process more coordinated for patients and providers, according to the announcement.

“Partnering with national DME partners under a value-based arrangement aligns with our goal to enhance access to the home care services we provide to patients across the country,” said Kirk Allen, senior vice president of home solutions at Humana, in the release.

Allen said that in addition to streamlining Humana's efforts to provide DME to its members, the partnerships will make it easier for the insurer to roll out programs aimed at reducing unnecessary hospitalizations.

Humana said that it is currently in the process of reaching out to its HMO members to inform them about the transition, and the two DME companies will also be reaching out to members to ensure there is continuity for the equipment they need once the new contract takes effect.

The partnerships will not extend to members in Medicare Advantage PPO or private fee-for-service plans or to other business lines such as Medicaid, commercial and Tricare.
