Four States Selected to Participate in NASHP’s Third Health and Housing Institute

The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) is pleased to announce that the following four states have been selected to participate in the Health and Housing Institute (HHI) 2024–2026 cohort:

  • Connecticut
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • Oregon

Through the HHI, a project funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), NASHP will work with each state team to develop, implement, and align health and housing programs.

The purpose of the HHI is to support cross-agency and federal-state-local strategies to increase access to safe, affordable housing and wrap-around services and supports for people who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

Through the HHI, state teams will build and implement strategic plans, receive targeted technical assistance, participate in peer learning opportunities, and learn about best practices from national, state, and local subject matter experts. Additionally, in partnership with HRSA, NASHP’s HHI will collaborate with the Housing and Services Partnership Accelerator program via joint multi-state convenings, mutually available resources, and coordinated technical assistance opportunities.

While the goals of state teams vary, teams will work to foster cross-agency collaboration and implement whole-of-government approaches to addressing health and housing priorities; weave health and housing priorities into the fabric of state Medicaid transformation initiatives; and implement data strategies to identify target populations and service needs, implement programs, and evaluate outcomes. Core state team members include state leadership from Medicaid, housing, behavioral health, aging, disabilities, governor’s office, public health, and corrections divisions.

State-Only Health and Housing Learning Community

Over the next two years and beyond, the four state teams in the HHI will continue to work toward increasing access to safe, affordable housing and wrap-around services and supports for people who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability. NASHP is also hosting a state-only Health and Housing Learning Community which is open to all state officials interested in participating. Lessons learned from the HHI will be shared through the learning community and in the form of blogs and other publications on our Health and Housing Resource Center
