The CDC reports that after decades of decline, progress has slowed in preventing stroke deaths. Every 40 seconds someone has a stroke in the US. Almost 800,000 people have a stroke each year, more than 140,000 die and many survivors face disability. This is disturbing because about 80% of strokes are preventable.
Download this CDC handout to learn how your team can improve how it helps people at risk for stroke and help those who have had a stroke.
Also, Briggs has a Patient Education Guide to help you, your team and the residents you care for understand strokes and the treatments following a stroke. Share it with their families and representatives as well.
Patient Education Guide: Stroke (#8125)
The guide covers:
- Understanding Stroke
- Incidence of Stroke
- Stroke Risk Factors
- The Effects of Stroke
- Preventing a Recurrent Stroke
- Stroke Rehabilitation
- Life at Home
- Family, Caregivers and Stroke
- Survivor and Caregiver Responsibilities
- Handling Emergencies
- Medical Intervention and Follow-Up
Reducing stroke risk factors and improving the quality of stroke care are needed to continue the decline in stroke deaths.
