MDH offers options for Nurse Aides working during the Federal 1135 Waiver to become certified for a limited time.
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) received an extension for the 1135 waiver for nurse aides working during the 1135 waiver, who provided essential care to Minnesota’s elderly when they were most needed.
Nurse aides working during the 1135 waiver have additional time to become certified in preparation for the end of the Federal Emergency 1135 Regulatory Waiver of Training and Certification of nurse aides on April 5, 2023, or the end of the PHE whichever comes first.
For those who have not passed a competency evaluation and who are not currently listed in the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry must do the following before the 1135 waiver ends to be eligible to work as a nurse aide:
- Complete training by enrolling in a Minnesota-approved training program before taking the competency evaluation for placement on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
- MDH will allow facilities to credit training received while working in a long-term care facility under the 1135 waiver towards their required 75-hours of training in a Nurse Aide Training Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP).
- Challenge and pass the competency evaluation within the first four attempts (through March). Anyone who successfully challenges the competency evaluation does not need to complete nurse aide training.
