In this month’s edition of Health Policy News, we continue our Focus on Caregiving Series with a deep dive by our subject matter experts on the role of family members in the “caregiving workforce”. We look into how states are taking action to reduce burdens on these family members by re-examining State requirements and through compensation and other types of support. Our second article this month follows up on our coverage last year of California’s first-of-its-kind Medicaid waiver involving the Justice-Involved population and subsequent Federal guidance. More recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved Washington’s Re-Entry Demonstration Ratio Initiative as part of the state’s Medicaid Transformation Project Waiver. Our newest article examines Washington’s waiver as well as the 15 pending Re-Entry Waiver applications nationwide.

Building the Caregiving Workforce by Supporting Family Caregivers 

As we continue our caregiver series, we focus in on the role of family members as part of the “caregiving workforce.” As states rely on family members for some or all the care a portion of Medicaid beneficiaries need, there are a number of considerations to ensure those family members are not overburdened and have the support they need. Revisiting Pending Medicaid 1115 Re-Entry Demonstration Waivers and Where They Stand 

Last spring, Health Policy News highlighted the major components of California’s Section 1115 Re-Entry Demonstration Waiver as well as subsequent Federal guidance about such waivers. In this month’s follow-up, we explore the recently approved Washington waiver as well as pending applications in 15 states. This article takes a deeper dive into the approved and pending waiver applications and amendments to examine options and trends in the effort to provide re-entry services to individuals who are incarcerated.
