The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) is accepting applications for its 2024 Emerging Leaders of Color (ELC) Fellowship designed to provide early-career individuals from communities of color an opportunity to:

  • Learn about state health policy and state career pathways from a senior state leader of color
  • Develop a project aligning with their advisor’s state policy work
  • Expand leadership and professional skills and empower fellows with their lived experience as subject matter experts
  • Cultivate support within the state health policy community and ELC alumni

NASHP’s ELC Fellowship is an immersive program that aims to empower emerging and aspiring state health policy leaders of color — particularly those from communities most impacted by health inequities — with the tools to build a career in executive branches of state government and lead the development and administration of more equitable state health policy informed by their lived experiences. To effectively address health inequities, impacted individuals must not only inform health policy as community stakeholders, but as leaders in policy development and program administration. NASHP’s ELC Fellowship is committed to seeking emerging and aspiring health policy leaders and equipping them with the skills and tools needed to fully participate in the development and implementation of state health policy. Applicants may reside in any U.S. state. Selected fellows must be U.S. citizens and reside in the U.S. during the fellowship.

The 2024 ELC fellowship runs from February through December 2024 and requires fellows to commit approximately 35 hours a month to fellowship work. Each fellow is provided a total stipend of $6,300, plus travel expenses to attend NASHP’s annual health policy conference, an on-site meeting in Washington, D.C. for program activities, and a visit to the state of their advisor. Completed applications, including a resume, are due Monday, January 8, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. ET.

Selected applicants are matched with a senior state official leader of color as their advisor — selected from state health officials across the country — to help fellows learn about, navigate, and gain hands-on experience in state health policy. NASHP will provide additional guided learning opportunities for fellows and develop a community to share support and educational/professional opportunities. Each fellow will meaningfully contribute to state health policy by completing a deliverable developed in partnership with their advisor.

This fellowship will include the opportunity for fellows to

  • Travel to their state official advisor’s state
  • Visit Washington, D.C. to engage in-person with their ELC fellow cohort
  • Attend NASHP’s annual state health policy conference
  • Present the culmination of their project to NASHP staff in a virtual session

ELC fellows will also have opportunities to participate in state health policy-related learning experiences through a Lunch & Learn virtual series.

NASHP seeks applicants who:

  • Have obtained a bachelor’s degree
  • Are early career professionals with 2 to 5 years of state health policy experience or related professional experience; those in current state health policy or similar state government positions are encouraged to apply
  • Are considering a state health policy career
  • Can commit at least 35 hours per month on average (schedules can be flexible) during the fellowship program
  • Are U.S. citizens residing in the U.S.
